Here we go again! The mission to find the best donut shops in Florida for our donut trail videos can be a daunting task. However, I believe that I have found another gem serving up sumptuously delicious treats right in the heart of Fort Walton Beach. After coming home from Texas and experiencing one of Yelp’s top 100 donut shops, Round Rock Donuts Texas Size Donut, I was looking for a shop that I haven’t tried that could compete and I think I may have found a contender. From the service to the glazes to the unbelievable dough, the award-winning Okaloosa Donuts is no joke and comes out swinging!
As we know not all donuts are created equal, delicious maybe, but not equal. If I can be honest I have regretted eating a donut or two in my day (a very sad day). It’s rare, but it has happened to us all at least once. When this happens I tearfully send them into the abyss, never to be thought of again. Okaloosa Donuts, however, is a prime example of a donut shop that definitely loves what they do and you can taste it! They have been serving their creative version of delectable donut goodness for about 5 years now. And when I compare this place and the way they bake up the very product we all love, Okaloosa Donuts checks all the boxes and answers all of the questions.
Typically, when I go into a scout out a donut shop I wait to see how I’m greeted before whipping out any cameras, so I can let you, the reader know how I was treated before I began filming. Let me say that Okaloosa Donuts owners and employees were so friendly that I just flat-out told them what I was up to. That’s when I was asked the dreaded question, “After eating so many donuts, what is the best donut you’ve ever eaten?” To be honest, I can’t say that I have just one favorite, but what I can say is that I do have favorite donuts at specific shops, and Okaloosa Donuts is definitely now home to several of them but one in particular has garnered more love from me than the others. Just a little, but I don’t feel bad about it at all.
The Donuts:
On this occasion, we tried several of their amazing donuts. We tried Maple Bacon, Coconut Cream, Eclair, their ridiculously oversized Apple Fritter, and the apple pie-filled donut. To make a long story short all of these donuts were creative, well-executed, and phenomenal!
The coconut cream is new to the shop and it was absolutely bonkers! I split it down the middle just to see how much cream it actually had in it and it was just oozing deliciousness for days! I could eat an entire box of these things alone, but of course, it had more delicious buddies in tow.
The apple pie-filled donut was fantastic as well and again, it was stuffed to the rim with its rich apple-cinnamony goodness. Our fearless leader Nat’s favorite was the Eclair donut. She said it was light, fluffy, and super soft. She loved the filling, stating that it was sweetened perfectly and not over the top and that the chocolate icing was also amazing and I more than agree.
The Fritter:
If you’ve been reading our blogs you know that I love Apple Fritters, especially a big, oversized beast of a Fritter. Well, Okaloosa Donuts had a fritter that was just that! While not the biggest fritter I’ve had, it is definitely in the top three in size, and it does not sacrifice size for quality! This fritter is a giant, light, extremely fluffy, moist, and best of all, delicious! That’s right! I said this apple fritter is as big as a human head and you won’t need a cup of coffee, tea, or even milk to choke it down. It’s an easy eat and big enough to get you in trouble with your doctor.
My Favorite:
Of all the delicious donuts I had at Okaloosa Donuts my absolute favorite, without a shadow of a doubt, is their Maple Bacon Donut. This donut is a perfect balance of sweet and savory providing a satisfying crunch from the perfectly cooked bacon. The donut itself is moist and super soft, and the handmade glaze literally melts in your mouth! If they just sold the icing or glaze I’d stock my shelves with buckets of it! I have to admit that I almost feel guilty eating this little sinful delight because it is that incredibly good.
Closing:
After trying so many of the donuts at Okaloosa Donuts, I believe that a major thing that sets them apart, other than their impeccable service, unbelievable sweet treat lineup, and out-of-this-world glazes, is their dough! Their dough is, without a shadow of a doubt, the softest I’ve ever tried and I can’t get enough of it. I am saddened and blessed by the fact that I live so far away from this wonderful bake shop or I’d be 30 pounds heavier in a few days. Ultimately, I would like to say that I strongly believe that Okaloosa Donuts, can hold its own against Yelp’s top 100 easily, especially, the maple bacon. If you are in the Destin, Ft Walton Beach, or Okaloosa area and you are a donut fan, you definitely do not want to miss out on this little gem of a shop. Feel free to thank me later.
