Okay, I know I’ve written about mochi donuts in the past. They’re in my donut trail videos and all over our social media accounts. However, they were all at least 2 hours from Jacksonville at the time. Well, I am happy to say that after a long day enduring the blistering Florida heat, I have found a great mochi donut shop right here in St. Augustine and it was the highlight of our day!
Mochi donuts are a favorite amongst fans for their texture, chewiness, flavors, social media-worthy shape, and of course their share-ability. One of the newer additions to St. Augustine’s donut shop lineup, Mochiatsu, brings the light and fluffy delights to our neck of the woods, boasting numerous flavor options that I couldn’t wait to try! For today’s venture, I’ve ordered the strawberry shortcake, the ube, along with their taro with a cute little poke stick on top.
There’s nothing like biting into a fresh mochi donut and I can honestly say that these were just that, delicious and fresh. The ube had a tasty purple ube glaze with shredded coconut sprinkled on and it was the perfect start to our mochi experience. The glaze had just the right amount of sweetness.
However, my favorite donut was the taro, the taro glaze was light and delicious. I always love a donut with a great icing that leaves a lingering aftertaste that has you craving one more donut. This is where the taro shined the aftertaste was fantastic! The only thing that would’ve made it better is if I got to try the poké stick. Between all of the filming and photography, my 7-year-old daughter stealthily devoured it.
Our overall family favorite was the strawberry shortcake. The whole family loved the rich and creamy strawberry icing, and I agree it was a very enjoyable donut to share and eat.
Of course, with any donut, you have something to wash it down with, and Mochiatsu definitely has you covered with plenty of specialty drinks and shake options to satisfy your thirst needs. In our case, we tried a strawberry and peach shake, and man, was it good! In this business, I have tried a ton of specialty drinks, but this is by far one of my most memorable. The cream, strawberry, and peach flavors together make for an aesthetically pleasing, refreshingly mouth-watering delight that would satisfy any sweet tooth by itself. The shake was so good I literally started doing a celebratory dance in the car while I was drinking it! I’m not exaggerating either, It was that darn good!
Last but not least, Mochiatsu also sells delicious Korean hotdogs. And if you have never had a Korean hotdog before it is a deep-fried hotdog with several types of topping choices. In our case, we had the potato half-and-half. This concoction was half hotdog and half cheese stick topped with french fries cooked into the breading. I don’t know if they double-fry them or what, but I had no idea this type of deliciousness was possible with hotdogs!
Not only was the flavor out of this world but the cheese pull was ridiculous! I couldn’t believe that I had a cheese pull that stretched the full length of my arm, and if I could be honest, it would’ve continued if my arm was longer!
In closing from the history, the scenery, drinks, and food St. Augustine is always a good time. However, if you decide to venture just outside of the historic downtown area you’ll find this little gem of a shop called Mochiatsu that sells fantastic Mochi donuts, super cheesy fried hotdogs, and a bunch of other goodies that will put a huge smile on your face!
